Understanding Lash Retention: A Guide For Lash Artists
How Do Lash Extensions Work?
The Bonding Process: Lash extensions are carefully applied to each natural lash using a special adhesive. This adhesive is formulated to create a strong bond that holds the extension in place until the natural lash sheds. In order to achieve the best results, there are specific temperature and humidity ranges needed in order for the adhesive to cure around the extension and natural lash. The curing process involves a chemical reaction between the liquid adhesive and the moisture in the air which results in the liquid turning into a solid within seconds.
Natural Lash Growth Cycle: Natural lashes go through a growth cycle that consists of three phases: Anagen (growth phase), Catagen (transition phase), and Telogen (resting phase). The extensions are bonded to lashes at various stages of this cycle, which means that as natural lashes shed, the extensions fall out with them. This is a normal process and along with lifestyle wear and tear, this is why regular fills should be scheduled every 2-3 weeks depending on each client’s specific cycle.
What To Expect When Booking Appointments
Initial Consultation: During the first appointment, clients should expect a thorough consultation where the lash artist assesses the health and density of their natural lashes. This is also a great time to discuss the desired look, whether the client is seeking a natural enhancement or a dramatic full set. Ideally, the conversation regarding the retention expectations will begin here but should also continue throughout the appointment as you cleanse, isolate and apply lashes. Giving your client a thorough explanation of what is happening throughout the service is a great way to help relax them and feel comforted by your knowledge on the subject. You can read more on how to do an eyelash extension consultation here.
Application Process: Clients can expect the application process to take anywhere from 1.5 to 3 hours, depending on the style and number of lashes being applied. It's essential to explain that the initial application is more time-consuming than subsequent fill appointments.
Maintenance Appointments: Maintenance or fill appointments, are typically scheduled every 2-3 weeks. During these sessions, the lash artist will remove any grown-out, tilting or otherwise disruptive extensions and replace them with fresh new ones, ensuring the lash line remains full and healthy. Some client’s lashes will have a slower growth cycle than others, just like nails or head hair varies on each individual person. Fills should be booked accordingly.
Best Practices For Lash Retention
Aftercare Instructions: Proper aftercare is essential for maintaining lash retention. Here are some key tips to share with your clients:
-
Oil-Free Products: Encourage the use of oil-free makeup removers and cleansers near the eye area, as excessive oils can contribute to premature shedding of extensions.
-
Gentle Cleaning: Teach clients to gently clean their lashes daily with a lash-safe cleanser to remove debris and natural oils.
-
No Rubbing or Pulling: Remind clients not to rub or pull on their lashes, as this will contribute to excess loss and potentially traction alopecia (damaged hair follicles).
Lifestyle Considerations: Inform clients that certain lifestyle factors can impact lash retention. For example:
-
Swimming and Saunas: Frequent exposure to high water pressure and steam can weaken the adhesive bond.
-
Sleeping Position: Suggest sleeping on their back to avoid friction from pillows that can cause lashes to fall out.
Regular Fills: Emphasize the importance of regular maintenance appointments to keep lashes looking and feeling their best.
By understanding and effectively communicating these important details involved in lash retention, you can help your clients achieve beautiful, long-lasting lashes while simultaneously developing a relationship of trust and respect. This creates a solid foundation which will empower both you and your clients, leading to a successful and enjoyable lash extension experience.
