What are the Different Types of Eyelash Extensions?

Starting out as a lash artist, you may only hear about three main types of eyelash extensions styles: classic eyelash extensions, hybrid lash extensions, and volume eyelash extensions. While those are good foundational eyelash extension types, the world of eyelash extensions is much more broad!

Let’s get into the basics of different types of eyelash extensions!

Classic Eyelash Extensions

Classic lashes are exactly what they sound like — classic! They are one of the original eyelash extension types, and give your client a subtle, but defined eyelash extensions style. The main factor when it comes to classic lash extensions is that each lash is applied at a 1:1 ratio. And with the rise of clean girl aesthetic, classic lashes are making a comeback. This is perfect for those clients who are looking for a more natural look and beginners to extensions!

Volume Eyelash Extensions

To get into the basics of volume lash extensions — volume lashes are formed by attaching multiple extensions into fans, which are then applied to one natural lash. Typically, volume lash extensions have a smaller amount of lashes in 0.06 or 0.07 diameter. If you have a client that is looking for more fullness and more eyelash extensions styles, try volume lash extensions!

Mega-Volume Eyelash Extensions

Like volume eyelash extensions, mega volume lashes are formed by attaching multiple lightweight eyelash extensions into fans, but mega volume extensions typically have a higher lash count with lighter lashes (0.02-0.03). Because the extensions are so lightweight, this shouldn’t compromise the health of the natural lash. If you have a client that loves really dramatic eyelash extension types and prefers a dark lash line, mega volume is a great option for them.

Hybrid Eyelash Extensions

Another type of eyelash extensions styles is Hybrid Lash Extensions. Hybrid lash extensions use a mixture of classic and volume fans to create something in the middle. They have a little more fluff than a classic lash set, but less drama than a volume lash set. Wispy lash sets are customizable and can be light or dramatic depending on mapping, but the most important thing about wispy lashes is the texture they achieve. A good candidate for wispy lash extensions is a client who want natural eyelash extensions styles, yet bold, and doesn’t gravitate towards a “perfect” looking lash set.

Cat-Eye Lash Extensions

Cat-Eye is a lash mapping style that is designed to create a lifted elongated effect, similar to a cats eye. This look is achieved by placing the shortest length in the inner corner and gradually increasing, with the longest length in the outer corner. Who should get a cat eye map? Cat Eye eyelash extensions styles are perfect for clients who love a dramatic and bold look, and are most flattering on a round or almond shaped eye.

Who shouldn’t get a cat eye map? If your client has a downturned eye, this map will not be the most flattering on them as it can cause a drooping appearance.

Doll-Eye Lash Extensions

The Doll Eye Map is a symmetrical lash mapping style designed to make the eyes look bigger, rounder and more open. This is achieved by placing the longest length lashes over the pupil, and gradually tapering them shorter towards the inner and outer corners.

Who should get a doll eye map? Doll Eye eyelash extensions styles are most flattering for those with downturned, monolid or hooded eyes. This map is great for opening up smaller eyes, creating a brighter and rounded effect.

Who shouldn’t get a doll eye map? If your client has protruding eyes or naturally round eyes, this map might make the eyes appear overly round.

Kitten Eye Lash Extensions

Kitten Eye Mapping is a softer, more subtle version of the cat eye, which is a universally flattering and natural map, with the longest length at the arch of the brow. This map provides a flattering lift without exaggerating the outer corners.

Who should get a kitten eye map? Virtually all eyeshapes look good with kitten eye eyelash extensions styles, as they create a gentle lift without dragging the eyes down. 

Color Eyelash Extensions

Anything you can do with black lash extensions, you can do with colored eyelash extensions. From a subtle enhancement with brown lashes to making a statement with vibrant hues, colored lash extensions let you customize any look.

If you’ve ever shopped for lash extensions you’ve probably heard of different types of eyelash extensions, and words like silk, faux mink, cashmere or synthetic being thrown around. It sounds like they’re different types of eyelash extensions styles, right? Here’s the truth: they’re all made from the same synthetic fiber… and these are just marketing terms depending on where you purchase your eyelash extension supplies.

Let’s dive deep into mink vs faux mink lashes and talk about if there are really eyelash extension types or if it’s truly just marketing.

Mink Lash Extensions

Real Mink eyelash extension types are actually rare. When referring to real mink lash extensions, they are exactly that—real mink animal hair made into lash extensions. These lashes are soft, lightweight and closely resemble human hair. However, despite misconceptions about luxury, they come with major drawbacks.

They lose their curl quickly, and since they’re made from animal fur, they can trigger allergic reactions in some clients. Plus, they do draw some ethical concerns and inconsistent quality.

Synthetic Lash Extensions

Synthetic lash extensions are the standard. Almost all types of eyelash extensions styles are actually created from the same synthetic material - PBT (polybutylene terephthalate). This synthetic fiber mimics the softness and natural appearance of real mink fur, but is not made from actual animal hair. With today’s technology, synthetic extensions are designed to be soft, lightweight and natural looking.

Silk Lash Extensions

Despite the name, there is no actual silk in these lashes. This name just makes these lashes sound like different eyelash extension types, but the truth is, they’re still made from PBT–just like the rest.

Faux Mink Lash Extensions

You guessed it, faux mink eyelash extension types are once again, made with PBT, just like the rest. They’re often marketed as fluffier and more flexible, but the difference is all in the branding and not the material.

Cashmere Lash Extensions

Cashmere eyelash extensions sound more luxurious, but don’t be fooled, these are still made from PBT! Some brands use this term to market ultra-light weight lashes, but at the end of the day, they’re made from the same material as the rest.

Understanding Different Eyelash Extension Curl Types

Another thing that is very important to understand when it comes to lash extensions is eyelash extension curl types. There are many eyelash extension curl types, and different curls can completely change the look of a lash set, so knowing the different curls is key.

Don’t know which curl to choose? Some places offer eyelash extension kits with multiple curls. 

J Curl

J curl is a more relaxed curl. Some would say that this is the most natural option with just a slight curl, which is perfect for clients who want subtle enhancement.

B Curl

Another one of the relaxed eyelash extension curl types is B Curl. B curl provides a bit more curve than J curl, but still keeps things very natural and flat.

C Curl

C curl is one of the most popular curls! It’s a relaxed curl type, but a little more of a curve than B curl.

D Curl

Another one of the eyelash extension curl types is D curl. It is a dramatic curl for maximum lift, which is perfect for bold and dramatic sets or those with flatter lashes.

L Curl

L curl is flat at the base that transitions into an upward curve, which resembles the letter L. They’re great for creating a lifted eye, and are great to create eyeliner or foxy eye lash sets.

With so many different types and different styles of eyelash extensions to choose from, how do you know which one is right for you or your client?

Here are a few things to consider.

Choosing Based on Your Desired Look

Does your client love a soft, natural enhancement, or a bold and dramatic look? Your clients’ style goals will determine the curl, length, and style best suited for your client.

For example, if your client loves a dramatic look – mega volume all the way. If your client wants a more textured, less perfect looking lash set, you might lean towards wispy!

Matching Eyelash Extensions to Your Eye Shape

As discussed during the mapping section, eye shape determines the best map for your client. 

You wouldn’t want to give a client with downturned eyes a cat eye map, because it can cause their eyes to look droopy, with the longest length at the end. Instead, you’d want to offer them a kitten eye, which can give their eye a slight lift.

Factoring in Your Lifestyle and Maintenance Preferences

When choosing between different styles of eyelash extensions, you want to be sure to consider your clients’ lifestyle and maintenance needs.

For example, a busier client with a super active lifestyle might lean more towards a more natural or classic look, but you might want to consider giving them volume or mega volume lashes because the sweating involved in an active lifestyle doesn’t call for great retention.
