How To Use Soft Wax: A PLA Step-By-Step

If I had to choose one wax to use forever, it would be soft wax. It’s quick, efficient, and perfect for covering larger areas like legs, arms, and backs. It’s definitely my go-to for delivering smooth, polished results. As an esthetician, I’ve waxed so many people, and let me tell you learning to use a soft wax kit properly took some practice! Figuring out how to apply it thinly and mastering the strip removal felt overwhelming at first. But over time, I realized that soft strip wax doesn’t have to be complicated, it just takes practice!

I want to walk you through everything you need to know about soft wax: what it is, how to use it step by step, and the best wax aftercare tips to make sure your clients feel amazing long after their appointment.

So, What Is Soft Wax?

Soft wax is a type of wax that’s ideal for removing hair from larger areas like the legs, arms, and back. It’s applied in a thin layer and removed with strips, making it efficient for covering more surface area quickly.

What makes soft wax unique is its ability to adhere to both the hair and the skin. This ensures even fine, short hairs are removed. Because it removes the top layer of dead skin cells along with the hair, soft wax also acts as an exfoliator, giving the skin a polished finish.

However, since soft wax adheres to the skin, it can be slightly more intense for clients with sensitive skin. With proper technique, though, it delivers amazing, long-lasting results.

How To Use Soft Wax

Let’s talk about how to use soft wax safely. It’s all about preparation and technique. Here’s a step-by-step guide:

Pre-Wax Appointment Prep:

Before your client arrives, take the time to prepare your setup for a smooth and efficient session. Start by heating the soft wax in a PLA Wax Warmer until it reaches a smooth, spreadable consistency. Having the wax ready to go means your client won’t have to wait, and you’ll be able to start the appointment right away.

Prepare The Skin With PLA Wax Products:

When your client arrives, cleanse the area with a pre-wax solution to remove oils, dirt, and sweat. For the best results, remind your clients to exfoliate 48 hours before their wax! Always dry the skin completely before applying the wax.

Apply The Best Soft Wax:

Use a wooden spatula or applicator to spread a thin layer of wax in the direction of hair growth. Work in small sections to maintain control and precision. Don’t forget to test the wax on yourself before applying it to your client to ensure it’s at a safe temperature!

Apply The Wax Strips:

Place a wax strip over the wax and press it down firmly, smoothing it in the direction of hair growth.

Remove The Strip:

Hold the skin taut with one hand, and with the other, pull the strip off quickly in the opposite direction of hair growth. Pro-tip: Keep your motion parallel to the skin to reduce discomfort.

Avoid Repeating:

Avoid going over the same area more than once to prevent irritation. If you notice stray hairs left behind, use waxing tweezers to remove them carefully.

Clean Up:

Remove any residual wax with a gentle post-wax treatment or cleanser. This leaves the skin clean, smooth, and ready for aftercare.

Wax Aftercare For Clients

Proper aftercare is essential to keep the skin smooth and irritation-free after waxing. Here’s what I recommend to my clients:

Soothe The Skin:

Apply a soothing lotion or aloe vera gel immediately after waxing to calm redness and keep the skin hydrated. I personally LOVE Apres for this step—it’s a lifesaver!

Avoid Heat:

For the first 24-48 hours, avoid hot showers, saunas, or sweating from exercise. Heat can exacerbate redness and irritation.

Stay Away From Tight Clothing:

Wear loose, breathable fabrics to prevent friction on freshly waxed skin.

No Touching Or Scratching:

Remind clients not to touch or scratch the waxed area, as this can introduce bacteria and lead to breakouts.

Exfoliate Gently:

After 48 hours, clients can start gently exfoliating with PLA’s Doux Wax Aftercare Product 2-3 times a week to prevent ingrown hairs and keep the skin smooth.

Soft wax is a reliable, efficient method for achieving smooth, hair-free skin. It’s perfect for larger areas and delivers amazing results when applied with the right technique. With proper aftercare, your clients will love the polished, long-lasting results soft wax provides.

If you’re new to soft wax, take your time practicing and perfecting your technique. You’ve got this!
