Beginner Lash Tech Tips And Mistakes To Avoid
Hey there, lash pro! When I started in this industry as a new lash artist, I made a lot of mistakes. There were many aspects of the business where I had no previous experience, and I didn’t have anyone to guide me. I’m here to help you kickstart your journey so you don’t have to follow the same path I did. Let’s dive into three common mistakes many beginners make, how to avoid them and set you up for a smooth, long-lasting career.
Lash Beginner Tips For Success: Learn From Others’ Mistakes
Avoiding Free Work
One common mistake new lash artists make is jumping too quickly into client work. If you start taking paying clients without proper practice and experience, you may struggle to achieve your clients’ desired results.
Lash Extension Tips For Beginners: Invest in a quality, in-depth course and allocate time and energy to practicing your hands-on skills on free or paid models. Practice makes progress! Start with mannequin heads to hone your technique before working on live models. To gain the confidence and skills required to accept payment for your services, complete at least 10 practice sets before you start charging. Remember, “free work” is an investment in your skillset as a lash artist that will pay off big time and better prepare you for paying clients. Struggling With Isolation
Isolating lashes can be tedious, but it is one of the most important steps. Without proper isolation, you risk applying extensions or fans to more than one natural lash, causing discomfort and potential lash damage.
Lash Tech Tips For Beginners: Don’t worry about speed as a beginner. Take your time when isolating and ensure each extension is only attached to one natural lash. Use sensitive tape to lift the layers if you’re struggling with shorter lashes. A slightly curved tweezer can help you get between those tiny lashes. Our Paris Lash Academy P5 Tweezer is perfect for precision isolation in the tightest areas. Once you build up the skill you need, read our blog on speed lashing here.
Underemphasized Aftercare Education
As a new lash artist, it can be intimidating to talk to clients about aftercare, and it’s easy to let them leave without proper education. However, this mistake can lead to buildup on the lash line, itching, discomfort, poor retention, and in some cases even infections.
Lash Tips For Beginners: Develop a consultation checklist to cover all client needs and expectations. Explain proper aftercare practices during and after the service, including how to cleanse lashes gently, avoid oil-based products, and schedule maintenance appointments. During the client’s first service, wash her lashes with a soft brush and cleanser, and explain, “this is what it feels like to wash your lashes effectively.” Be specific about what to use, when to use it, and how to use it. If you just tell your client to “wash your lashes every day,” she might think splashing water on her eyes once a day is sufficient. Be as specific as possible.
A Message From Ashley At PLA:
Everyone’s lash journey is so unique, just like every lash set! My best advice to you is to be okay with learning from mistakes and to approach each uncomfortable situation you encounter with a growth mindset. The only reason I am able to give so much to you all and help you in your career is due to the valuable experiences I have had, some not so fun in the moment.
You’ve got this and I am rooting for you along the way!
Xoxo
